FAQ: The Lazy DM's Companion

Why are there three different formats for the three books?

There’s a specific reason we have three different formats and it all has to do with how they get used.

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master is a book to sit down with in a comfy chair and read over a cup of coffee on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It’s a book of DM philosophy you can read and think about.

The Lazy DM’s Workbook is meant to sit with you right at the table when you’re running your game. It’s a 48 page DM screen. It’s spiral bound so that it sits flat and can be folded over itself on the table so you only have the page in front of you that you need at the moment and still have room for all your other stuff.

The Lazy DM’s Companion is meant to be referenced while you actually prepare your game. It’s page count means that hardcover wouldn’t be particularly useful (it would look like a book on Barbar). For that use, perfect-binding is the best choice.

When and how do I get the PDFs I pledge for?

If your pledge includes a PDF that is already published, like Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master, you will receive a link to download the PDF as well as instructions on how to add the PDF to your DriveThruRPG account AFTER you complete the Backerkit Survey which will be sent approximately 2 weeks after this campaign ends.

PDFs for The Lazy Dungeon Master’s Companion will be sent around the same time that the book goes into to production which is expected to be early 2022.

Will there be a retailer pledge?

Not during this Kickstarter. We want to get the whole printing, shipping, warehousing, and distribution flow in place before we open things up to retailers. However, Nord has worked with retailers on other projects so these books will, for the first time ever, be available to retailers once books have been shipped to backers. I love our friendly local game shops and am really excited to make my books available in your shops! I just don’t want to bite off more than I can chew right off the bat.

Will I be able to add the digital products to my DriveThruRPG account?

Yes! You’ll be able to either download it directly or get it through DriveThruRPG (or both!)

How useful are these books for other RPGs?

Very useful.

Of the 64 pages in the Lazy DM’s Companion, about nine of them contain 5e specific mechanics and even those are easily modified to suit other systems.

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master works well with any RPG. There are no 5e mechanics in it at all.

The Lazy DM’s Workbook has about six of 48 pages focused on 5e mechanics. Much of it can work with other systems as well.

The Companion and the Workbook both focus on fantasy RPGs, however. So if you’re into post-modern or sci-fi, they’re probably not as useful.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
